Practical Theology program
This diploma program is intended to train and equip those who aspire to do pratical ministry in their church, communities, market place and their workplace by providing them foundational Christian doctrines, Biblical studies, , basic mission and historical studies and practical guidelines for Christian life.
Practical theology, as its name implies, is the study of theology in a way that is intended to make it useful or applicable. Another way of saying it is that it is the study of theology so that it can be used and is relevant to everyday concerns.
The purpose of practical theology as helping to prepare students to translate the knowledge learned into effective ministry to people. Doing this involves both personal and family life as well as the administration and educational ministries in the church. They state that the goal of practical theology is to develop effective communicators of Scripture who have a vision for the spiritual growth of believers while being servant leaders.
Some consider practical theology to simply be a more technical name for the doctrine of the Christian life. Its emphasis is on how all the teaching of Scripture should affect the way we live today in this present world. The emphasis of practical theology is not simply to contemplate or comprehend theological doctrines but to move beyond that to applying those doctrines in everyday Christian life so that we “contribute to the world’s becoming what God intends it to be.”
The premise behind practical theology program is that future Christian leaders need to be equipped not only with theological knowledge but also with the necessary professional skills to minister effectively in the modern world.
II. OBJE CTIVES
Personal Maturity:
One focus of Pratical Theology is on the student’s personal maturity – that is, his or her ability to assess different situations and then respond to them appropriately. In this regard, factors of personality, self- awareness, gifts, experiences, etc, play an important part. But more significant are the attitudes which underlie them: Servant-hood, humility, Teachability, interdependence and accountability. Our goal is the kind of maturity which will result in people when they submit themselves wholeheartedly to God in service for Christ and others. Experience suggests that reflection and supervision can assist this process.
Theological Integration:
Pratical Theology provides a context for the student to translate the concept learned in the books into practical terms. The effective minister needs to be able to integrate his understanding of the Bible with practical issues. An inadequate theology can often be detected within the context of ministry.
Spiritual Formation:
Pratical Theology provides an opportunity for growth in relationship to God through Jesus Christ. Many aspects of spirituality are important for ministry: dependence on the Holy Spirit, a growing desire for fellowship with God, experience in prayer, respect for the sovereignty and grace of God, a desire to see others to know and grow in Christ. Pratical Theology without such relationship with God is empty and futile. Care in supervision and personal development of the devotional life can assist the nurturing of faith.
Skill Development:
Pratical Theology is designed to expose students to a range of ministry options over the period of their course so that gifts and abilities can be tested and developed.
